Celebrate summer with Midnight Sun^® weigela, a neat and tidy bun-shaped weigela with glossy, blazing orange and red summer-autumn foliage. Perfect for the front of the border, it functions much as a coleus would, but without having to replant it every year. It does bear pink flowers in spring, however, this plant’s form and colorful summer through autumn foliage are what makes it special.

Maintenance Notes:

Prefers well-drained soils but fairly adaptable to other soil types. If necessary, prune immediately after the spring bloom. Best flowering occurs in full sun, but light shade isn't harmful, particularly in warmer climates.
If desired, fertilize in early spring with a granular fertilizer formulated for woody plants, like a rose fertilizer.

I am in southern Ontario Canada , zone 6 . I bought 3 of these a couple years ago , mainly for the gorgeous foliage and the lower height . I must have them in the right spot as they have done extremely well and when the sun hits those leaves they glow , they are spectacular .

Purchased this shrub from a local nursery to place in the front of our home with full sun and exposure to the elements. This plant did not survive the winter in our zone 4 area and thankfully was warrantied with the nursery. When i brought it back in they said there weren't super surprised as it was a new variety and they weren't confident in its hardiness level yet. I did love the foliage and flowers, so perhaps a zone warmer or something more protected in a zone 4 would be more conducive to it's survival.

I bought 5 of these shrubs in 2023 and absolutely love them. The colors of the leaves are gorgeous and I really appreciate their small size compared to the larger Weigelas. I planted them in full sun in my Zone 7 garden as the tag indicated. However, last summer was brutally hot as I suspect will now be normal for my area, and the edges of the leaves on Midnight Sun became crispy. Because of this, I will move them to a slightly more sheltered area where they will get some filtered sunlight in the late afternoon. I definitely recommend this beauty to others. Just keep in mind the right plant in the right place.

I purchased this plan through the Proven Winners website. It was very small, hardly any leaves , and the branches on the plant were very minimal. This spring there is 0 signs of life. I contacted Proven Winners and they just replied with a “we don’t guarantee our plants”. Don’t buy this plant in the website. You will be wasting your money.

I was so looking forward to receiving this order. But was very disappointed when it arrived. I would say it's not up to proven winner's reputation. Very small About 6 inches tall, with a lot of dried leaves and not very colorful. Not worth the money I spent and will not order anything else from proven winner's website?

Received shrub early June. was very little of the "Sunset" coloring that I purchased plant for. But maybe because it was in dark when shipped. Well it's been over a month now, in full sun ALL DAY, and there is only green. No, orange/red/brown etc. So I thought maybe it was another occasion of the picture over exaggerating the foliage colors. But then went to local nursery, and theirs were beautiful. And lee $$ for plants that were triple size of what I got mail order. So, online buyer beware on this guy.

Zone 5b northwest Indiana I've 6- quart size, that I purchased early spring to plant towards the front of a new bed. They receive about 6 hrs of full sun, mostly mid morning to afternoon. They've been a kalidascope of color. I don't care if they ever bloom. I got them for the foliage and so far, as they are pretty small, they have not disappointed. Right now they have quite a bit of blazing red as if it's fall already. Early on they appeared more like the picture in the description on proven winners website. Love the compact size as well. Highly recommend.

I spied this plant from a distance at the garden center and thought, "What is THAT?" It is absolutely gorgeous (not in bloom). Not on my list, but I thought, "I am buying this beauty and I will find a place for it." I could not believe that it was a Weigela when I looked at the tag (I am not a Weigela fan) - never thought I would buy one, but the foliage on the Midnight Sun is just lovely - the shape and type of the leaves, and the COLOR! It looks nothing like a Weigela. I don't care if this ever flowers. The only reason that I am giving this a "4" is not through any fault of the plant, but that it's not getting quite enough sun to be in the most color that it can be. Added pluses : diminutive size and not a prima donna needing "babying".

Not very impressive. The foliage is okay, but nothing spectacular; it did not bloom for me this spring but hopefully next year. Originally marketed as 'attractive to hummingbirds' which was the reason I got it, if it does bloom (zone 7a here) it is likely to bloom before the hummingbirds even arrive (also I note that this comment has been removed from the description). I have a lot of Weigelas and this is by far the least impressive one.
