Two summers ago, I purchased a bedraggled little shrub that I came across in the 1/2 price section of a local gardening store. It was root-bound and the few leaves still on it were crinkled, but I thought it was worth at least trying. What a great find! Today that Fine Wine® Weigela is a prized jewel in my garden. The leaves are more refined than common weigelas - smaller & dark green with a tinge of purple around the edges. The foliage alone is attractive, but when the gently arching branches are covered with stunning pink flowers (mine blooms from April through August), the shrub is truly stunning. As previously mentioned, my plant wasn't in great health when I bought it, but the fact that it has thrived at my house tells me it is strong stock. It's easy to grow and doesn't appear to be bothered by pests or disease. This plant is a REAL winner.

The next generation of Wine & Roses® weigela has the same dark burgundy foliage but a compact, mounded habit similar to that of spirea or boxwood. Fine Wine® weigela is a refined plant with smaller leaves than Wine & Roses but similarly abundant pink spring flowers and excellent texture. It's a great plant for the front of the border, the perennial bed, or used as a low foundation plant.
Here is a nice comparison of our entire Wine series of weigela.
